Norwegian shipping magnate Arne Naess Jr., the ex-husband of singer-actress Diana Ross, recently fell to his death while climbing in the mountains near Cape Town, South Africa, police said.
The couple, who were married for 14 years, separated in 1999. They divorced in the Dominican Republic a year later (JET, Feb. 28, 2000). Two sons, Ross Arne and Evan Olav, were born from this union.
"Diana Ross and the boys are in shock and are very sad," a spokesman for the family told Norway's largest newspaper, Verdens Gang.
An experienced mountaineer, Naess, 66, was climbing the Groot Drakenstein mountains, about 70 kilometers (44 miles) outside of Cape Town, when he apparently slipped, local police report. No foul play was suspected. An autopsy was scheduled.
Police spokesperson Martins Engelbrecht said, "It appears he went climbing on his own and ... was on his way down when he slipped and fell about 100 meters (329 feet) to his death."
