Today I spent hours doing the search. I tried to learn - and to write about - a small Midwestern town that seeks to attract new industries, and therefore new jobs for its citizens.
I found a site for the library - I could not access because I am not a member.
I discovered there is a small museum. I learned that the city chapter of Kiwanis, Lions Club and American Legion. I even learned that there is a small hospital, and they have three dentists, and some doctors.
But all this, except the library, from sites nationwide where you just type the name of a city and it provides some factual information. If you have been to these sites, you know they do not say anything that might draw a portrait of the good life in a specific city. About the most encouraging things I learned about this community is that its cost of living is 85% of the national average and has a crime rate lower than average.
The Chamber of Commerce has a place - but he says nothing! Seriously - some of the pages had only a header - not content.
A city that wants prosperity should not be "hidden" this way!
We all know that prosperity for the whole community depends on people having jobs - jobs at the moment are of primary importance throughout America. And if a community can attract new industries or new enterprises, it will not create new jobs.
So it goes without saying that all citizens and all business owners in a community should do more than hope for the new industry. They should get together and show the world that theirs is a community useful. http://draft.blogger.com
Recent years, which was usually accomplished by printing and distributing written material. That, of course, is expensive and not very effective. The Chamber of Commerce has often been behind these efforts, and a handful of local businesses chipped in to pay.
Now, there is no reason to spend that money. A Web address costs less than lunch.
Of course, someone must pick up the pieces and leave a website in the world, but even hire someone to do it is not as expensive as printing and mailing brochures city - or the placement advertisements in magazines.
Each company can create its own page and should be included in a master index, classified by type of business. Each nonprofit organization, school and service club could do the same thing. The city itself could create a page on the city government and incentives to make "new" layout of the city, county or state. The Chamber of Commerce could provide information on opportunities for outdoor recreation, climate, etc.
Before long, this city would have a complete, comprehensive site, where a stranger could go to learn it is indeed a beautiful place to live and do business.
